Q: ”It is right to give Him thanks and praise”… but why? And how do we do that?
A: It’s an often-used part of our communion liturgy that can be repeated by rote. This part of the “Preface” (also known as the “Great Thanksgiving”) leads us into the proper preface, which gives reasons to give thanks as it tells the story of salvation! We hear in God’s Word that “Jesus Christ, our Lord, who, having created all things, took on human flesh and was born of the virgin Mary. For our sake He died on the cross and rose from the dead to put an end to death, thus fulfilling the Father’s will and gaining for Him a holy people.” We are made into one Body – a holy people – to declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light (1 Peter 2:9). How do we “give Him thanks and praise”? We do this by telling what He has done as we confess the faith with our words and actions. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God; it is right to give Him thanks and praise!
